Generalised bisection method for optimum ultrasonic ray tracing and focusing in multi-layered structures

2021

Ultrasonic testing has been used for many decades, proving itself very efficient for detecting defects in many industrial sectors. The desire to apply ultrasonic testing to geometrically complex structures, and to anisotropic, inhomogeneous materials, together with the advent of more powerful electronics and software, is constantly pushing the applicability of ultrasonic waves to their limits. General ray tracing models, suitable for calculating the proper incident angle of single element probes and the proper time delay of phased array, are currently required. They can support the development of new imaging techniques, as Full Matrix Capture and Total Focusing Method, and the execution of …

Observation of classically 'forbidden' electromagnetic wave propagation and implications for neutrino detection.

2018

Ongoing experimental efforts in Antarctica seek to detect ultra-high energy neutrinos by measurement of radio-frequency (RF) Askaryan radiation generated by the collision of a neutrino with an ice molecule. An array of RF antennas, deployed either in-ice or in-air, is used to infer the properties of the neutrino. To evaluate their experimental sensitivity, such experiments require a refractive index model for ray tracing radio-wave trajectories from a putative in-ice neutrino interaction point to the receiving antennas; this gives the degree of signal absorption or ray bending from source to receiver. The gradient in the density profile over the upper 200 meters of Antarctic ice, coupled wi…

Thorough analysis of Raspberry Pi devices in outdoor/indoor communications in terms of QoS

2020

The proliferation of commercial low-cost Small Board Computers (SBC) devices have allowed the deployment of many Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) focused on different applications, mainly based on monitoring issues. These networks are characterized by a set of these SBCs devices working in a collaborative way where each device is sensing, processing and later sending out the data to the sink. These devices are equipped with power supply, a processing unit and communications capabilities (in particular WiFi), making themselves very interesting to fit in many topologies. However, their performance in terms of communications basically depends on the environment and usually heuristic techniques a…

Intraocular Telescopic System Design: Optical and Visual Simulation in a Human Eye Model

2016

Purpose. To design an intraocular telescopic system (ITS) for magnifying retinal image and to simulate its optical and visual performance after implantation in a human eye model. Methods. Design and simulation were carried out with a ray-tracing and optical design software. Two different ITS were designed, and their visual performance was simulated using the Liou-Brennan eye model. The difference between the ITS was their lenses’ placement in the eye model and their powers. Ray tracing in both centered and decentered situations was carried out for both ITS while visual Strehl ratio (VSOTF) was computed using custom-made MATLAB code. Results. The results show that between 0.4 and 0.8 mm of d…

A New Numerical Approach to Estimate the Sunyaev–Zel’dovich Effect

2013

Several years ago, we designed a particular ray tracing method. Combined with a Hydra parallel code (without baryons), it may compute some CMB anisotropies: weak lensing (WL) and Rees–Sciama (RS) effects. Only dark matter is fully necessary to estimate these effects. For very small angular scales, we made an exhaustive study leading to a lensing contribution slightly—but significantly—greater than previous ones. Afterwards, the same ray tracing procedure was included in a parallel Hydra code with baryons. The resulting code was then tested. This code is being currently applied to the study of the thermal and kinetic Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (SZ) contributions to the CMB anisotropies. We present h…

Dual Connectivity in Non-Stand Alone Deployment mode of 5G in Manhattan Environment

2020

| openaire: EC/H2020/815191/EU//PriMO-5G The main target of this paper is to analyze the performance of an outdoor user in a dense micro cellular Manhattan grid environment using a ray launching simulation tool. The radio propagation simulations are performed using a Shoot and Bouncing Ray (SBR) method. The network performance is analyzed at three different frequencies i.e. 1.8 GHz, 3.5 GHz, and 28 GHz. Additionally, the benefits of combining LTE and potential 5G frequency bands by using feature of Dual Connectivity (DC) in an outdoor scenario has been highlighted. The considered performance metrics are received signal level, SINR, application throughput. The acquired simulation results fro…

Accommodation in human eye models: a comparison between the optical designs of Navarro, Arizona and Liou-Brennan.

2017

Aim To simulate and compare accommodation in accommodative and non-accommodative human eye models. Methods Ray tracing and optical design program was used. Three eye models were designed and studied: the Navarro, the Arizona and the Liou-Brennan. In order to make the Navarro and Liou-Brennan models to accommodate, specific geometric parameters of the models were altered with values that were chosen from the literature. For the Arizona model, its' mathematical functions for accommodation were used for the same accommodative demands. The simulation included four distances of accommodation for each model: at infinity, 3, 1 and 0.5 m.The results were diffraction images of a "letter F" for graph…

UMTS radio networks

2006

Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the contributions to the UMTS radio network planning, with the optimization being provided from COST 273 and the real-time tuning, which is related to RRM. The results on UTRAN performance evaluation by the means of simulation tools are also discussed. The UMTS planning includes processes like: the propagation and traffic models, the aspects of parameter planning, and the automatic planning algorithms. An accurate ray-tracing model integrated in a UMTS-capable planning tool allows the radio network planner to reach optimal numbers for the BS deployment and configuration while meeting the service level requirements. Ray tracing can identify the problem …

AnyDSL: a partial evaluation framework for programming high-performance libraries

2023

This paper advocates programming high-performance code using partial evaluation. We present a clean-slate programming system with a simple, annotation-based, online partial evaluator that operates on a CPS-style intermediate representation. Our system exposes code generation for accelerators (vectorization/parallelization for CPUs and GPUs) via compiler-known higher-order functions that can be subjected to partial evaluation. This way, generic implementations can be instantiated with target-specific code at compile time. In our experimental evaluation we present three extensive case studies from image processing, ray tracing, and genome sequence alignment. We demonstrate that using partial …

Resolution performance of programmable proximity aperture MeV ion beam lithography system

2007

AbstractAn ion beam lithography system for light and heavy ions has been developed at the University of Jyväskylä's Accelerator Laboratory. The system employs a programmable proximity aperture to define the beam. The proximity aperture is made up of four Ta blades with precise straight edges that cut the beam in the horizontal and vertical directions. The blade positions and dimensions are controlled by a pair of high-precision linear-motion positioners. The sample is mounted on a X-Y-Z stage capable of moving with 100 nm precision steps under computer control. The resolution performance of the system is primarily governed by the proximity aperture. Pattern edge sharpness is set by the beam…
